Grief
Sometimes we experience a major loss, particularly when we expect certain things to occur in our lives that do not happen. It can adversely impact our entire world view and the quality of our life.
This restorative process supports growth and gradually lessens the pain of loss.
Whether it’s a bereavement, a professional setback, the loss of a friendship or family relationship, medical challenges or other losses, we go through a challenging process of coming to terms with a loss. I work with clients to explore the meaning and the importance of the loss and suggest ways for clients to better integrate that loss into their lives.
A loss is the event that begins the grieving process. Grief is the strong emotion we experience as we accept the reality of the loss. Mourning is the process of adapting to the loss and rebuilding our lives. Sometimes it is more difficult to adapt to a particular loss and we find ourselves stuck in the grieving process and unable to move forward. In these situations, counselling can be particularly helpful.
My approach to grief counselling
In addition to using talk therapy and other counselling approaches, I have training in using EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) in working with grief and loss. Although EMDR does not eliminate the loss and its accompanying memories, it can help clients focus more on positive memories, rather than painful ones. This can be very helpful in adapting to a loss and moving forward with ones life.
