Relationship/Couple Counselling
As your relationship counsellor, I will be like a native guide to help you through the peaks and valleys of your relationship journey.
Let's get started
I will meet with both of you during our first couple counseling session (a “conjoint” session), and then will meet individually with each of you on one occasion after that. In our next meeting, we will together develop a plan of action that will guide our later work together.
What is relationship counselling?
Relationship problems occur in the dynamic between partners. Something isn’t quite right and there’s increased friction, reduced communication and diminishing joy, trust, and communication. Relationship counselling focusses on the challenges and strengths in that dynamic and how to change it for the better.
Change involves identifying what’s working well and what isn’t, opening options, agreeing on a pathway forward and moving forward on that pathway. Change doesn’t happen overnight and it’s not always easy, but relationships can change for the better. Sometimes enhancement means staying together and other times parting ways (or anything in between).
How can relationship counselling help?
Relationship counseling is more of an art than a science. Sometimes a relationship counsellor needs be warm, supportive, and empathic, other times directive and decisive, all at the same time.
As your relationship counsellor, I will be on both of your sides, focused on what’s important for each of you individually and for your relationship. I will support and challenge you, while being both neutral and actively involved. I will celebrate your successes and joys and empathise with you during the difficult times.
This is where the art of relationship counselling comes in. It isn’t about “fixing” you (because you’re not broken). It’s about understanding your relationship, asking the right questions at the right time and in the right way and seeing new possibilities. Relationship counselling involves intervening when needed, holding you accountable while supporting you and bringing realistic hope into your relationship. My approach to relationship counselling
Relationship counseling can involve intense positive and negative emotions. I find clients do their best work together in a calm and reflective counselling setting. When I previously worked as a family lawyer, I created that kind of calm professional space.
As a counsellor, I hold that space firmly, compassionately, and flexibly during intense emotional reactivity. Doing so means being simultaneously gentle and strong, empathic and assertive.
I will meet with both of you during our first couple counseling session (a “conjoint” session), and then will meet individually with each of you on one occasion after that. In our next meeting, we will together develop a plan of action that will guide our later work together.
Although my work with couples is confidential, anything either of you tells me in individual sessions (or otherwise) I will share with your partner. I will not be keeping secrets between partners. I find this supports our work together.
I generally find it takes a minimum of six sessions to get the best outcomes with couples.
For this reason, I offer a prepaid, six session discounted couple counselling package. The cost is $625 including GST.

Communication with your other professional advisors.
Sometimes couple counselling clients are working with other professionals (such as lawyers, accountants, or medical professionals) in connection with their relationship issues. If clients authorise me to communicate with their other advisors, I can do so.
Please note,I do not provide clients with any legal advice in our counseling work or otherwise.
